Americans for Computer Privacy (ACP) was founded as a coalition to represent the high-tech industry in the debate over software encryption policy.
Duffey was retained to coordinate ACP grassroots activities in Georgia. A standard letter advocating Internet commerce and privacy was drafted and sent to targeted key influencers.
Key community leaders and businessmen began calling on their assigned legislators to arrange for a meeting to discuss this important issue.
As a result of Duffey’s efforts, Congressman John Linder signed on as a co-sponsor of the legislation and former Speaker Newt Gingrich appointed Congressman Bob Goodlatte, the sponsor of the bill, to be the leader of the Speaker’s Technology Working Group to advise Gingrich on Internet and privacy issues.
Additionally, the late Senator Paul Coverdell was not only supporting the legislation, but joined the Congressional Internet Caucus and established an Internet Advisory Council in Georgia made up of prominent business leaders in the technology industry. The legislation successfully passed through all five House Committees that claimed to have jurisdiction.
